9 social media trends that will change the way you do your job in 2022

Dear social media marketers,

Here at Hootsuite, we know it can be tough working in an industry that morphs faster than a Power Ranger. But, don't worry, we're here to help.

We've combined data from our global Social Trends 2022 report, data from our survey of 18,000 marketers, and our Digital 2021 reports to bring you a list of 9 social media trends that will shape your job this year.

1. TikTok will become the most important network for marketing (??!)
Instagram, step aside. Over the last year, search demand for TikTok has grown by 173%. But search demand for Instagram Reels has only grown by 22%.

2. You will start spending big ad dollars on smaller networks
Pinterest, Snapchat, and TikTok are enticing advertisers with less crowded platforms and higher return on investment.

3. Shoppers will expect to buy your products directly on social media
Time to set up your Instagram shop. Social commerce will be an $80 billion dollar industry by 2025.

4. No one will want to talk to your brand on the phone
64% of people said they would prefer to message (via digital channels like social media) rather than call a business on the phone. Add old-school customer service to the list of things millennials have killed.

5. Long-form video is a bust, except on YouTube
Instagram has deprecated IGTV. No one talks about Facebook Watch anymore. And even YouTube, the last bastion of long-form video on social media, has introduced a new format: YouTube Shorts.

6. You will outsource (at least some of) your engagement tactics to an influencer
As of 2021, 50 million people consider themselves to be creators on social networks. And businesses are set to spend $15 billion on influencer marketing by 2022. (For good reason! Creators are better at social media than most brands are.)

7. You need to learn paid advertising (even if you don't do ads yet)
The average organic reach for a Facebook post is 5.2%. Learning the basics of audience targeting and boosting is now a must if you want to spread awareness about your business beyond your current followers.

8. You won't post anything without a social listening strategy
What do a global health crisis, ongoing political upheaval, labor shortages and supply chain issues all have in common? They've each shown businesses the value of understanding their customers' changing preferences (not to mention, avoiding PR mishaps).

9. Your VP will ask you to develop a social audio strategy
Cool, cool, cool. This wouldn't be a trends article without a mention of Clubhouse (which grew in popularity by 321% in February 2021 alone)!
